Make Money as a Mystery Shopper

5 July 2008 932 views 6 Comments

You may have recently seen a featured article on Yahoo that talked about “mystery” or “secret” shopping. This is something that has been around for quite some time, but isn’t real well known. Basically, you can get paid or reimbursed for going to stores, restaurants, etc. and do what you’d normally do when you go to those places. While you’re there you take note of the service, the atmosphere, the prices, and any other details that the mystery shopping company wants you to get.

You’re basically doing a “recon mission” for the companies. In exchange, you are paid for your time and are often also reimbursed for the purchases you make. You really can’t go wrong with it! You might have to work around particular deadlines, but this should work around your college schedule. This is a great fit for us poor college students!

So where do you start? I think the first thing you’ll want to do is learn all about what this whole mystery shopping thing is about. Take a look at this site or this one. They give some great information to get you started!

Let’s start with that. You go and check those out and I’ll make another post in the next few days to give you more insight into this and what has helped me be successful at it. Stay tuned for more!

I always was skeptical about those job positions. They seem to be in every city. It never seemed legit. I wonder how much you even get paid.

@ankit: There’s a bit more to it than just hanging around, but yes, it’s pretty cool huh?

@clockwork: It is indeed a legitimate possibility. I’ll get into more of the specifics in one of my future posts. I highly suggest you take a look at the two links I included. That will get you started!

    Hey,
You are right.. We can earn a lot by becoming mystery shoppers, not just that, you will also be able to travel to different cities & the company will pay for your stays !!

I know all this coz one of my friends has worked in a company for 2 months in India as a mystery shopper.

Thanks for sharing it with us… really liked your post

A few years ago I saw an ad in the local paper for one of these jobs. I called the number listed in the ad for more information. I was told I’d have to pay a starting fee of about $100. I did and never heard from the company again. The best advice I ever recieved about these kind of things is that: “If it seems too good to be true, than it probably is.” No legit place of employment would make you pay a “start-up fee”.
