1. KeePass – This program helps you store and keep track of your passwords for nearly anything you do on your computer.  This program isn’t absolutely necessary for those of you that are using Firefox’s built in functionality, but this program takes things a step further. It’s great and easy to use! Check it out!

2. Pidgin or Meebo – Like most students, you likely spend a ton of time online. As you’re surfing, you’re likely using some sort of instant messenger to keep in touch with your friends. Pidgin and Meebo (web-based) makes things easier. They both allow you to login to multiple accounts (Yahoo, MSN, Google chat, etc.) all at the same time. The days of having 4 different programs all running at once are over!

3. GIMP - Gimp is probably the best free program out there that can compete (sort of) with Adobe Photoshop. Save your $300+ and use this instead of buying photoshop!

4. Open Office - You may already know about this one. It’s essentially a free alternative to Microsft Office. If you’ve been used to Microsoft, this will take some getting used to, but not spending $150 is worth that!

5. VLC Media Player – This program will play nearly any kind of video file you throw at it. If you’re like me, you probably aren’t a huge fan of Quicktime or Real Player. This easily takes the place of them!

6. OttoBib – This is a nice little site that makes writing up a bibliography much, much easier. It does all the work for you!

7. FreeMind – This program allows you to do what is called “mind-mapping” – which basically means brainstorming. It allows you to take ideas in your head and put them down on paper in a natural, readable layout. I used this a lot when preparing to write papers or when starting projects. You’ll be amazed at how much it helps your thoughts stay organized!

The name of the program is “SuperAntiSpyware” and it’s great. Sure, it’s a bit of a cheesy name, but it works wonderfully. This program has managed to find viruses and spyware that many of the other programs (AVG, Avast, AdAware) I had been using had not found.

I would highly recommend that you go and download the free version of this program!

Also, today is my birthday!!! I thought this would be a good opportunity to draw your attention to this post, and let you know what free stuff I plan on getting for my birthday!

The link has a pretty extensive list of places you can go to get free stuff on your birthday. In particular I plan on getting free ice cream from Dairy Queen and Cornerstone, a free burger from Red Robin, free BBQ from Famous Dave’s, and free Krispy Kreme donuts to share with my buddies. All in all, a ton of food, but I can stretch things over a few days as the coupons they send you for all this stuff don’t all need to be used on your birthday. Pretty sweet deal if I do say so myself!

There are all kinds of programs out there made to protect your computer from a virus. Most will cost you a pretty big chunk of change. Others you can get for free! I want to point you to a couple free options out there.

The two programs I’d like to point you to are AVG and AVAST. Both are free. Both do their jobs like they are supposed to. Both use a much smaller portion of your computer’s resources than some of the big name programs out there. Both will protect you from a virus!

Instead of going out and paying $19.99 or more on your next virus upgrade, I suggest you download one of these two programs! You won’t be sorry! If you have an idea of any other free programs out there that can compete with these two, please share in the comments!

Ruckus.com is a great established site which allows you to download music for free. There are ads all over the site which allows them to give music away for free. They also have an agreement with the record labels so that helps also. Go ahead and check out their About page and find out more!

Giveaway of the Day is a fantastic website where you’ll find a lot of high quality programs. The only catch? They only offer one program for 24 hours at a time, and you must install the program within that 24 hours.

However, it gets better than that! There’s a website out there that has compiled a list of coupons that will work for these vending machines. These coupons will give you free rentals! Each code will work once per credit/debit card that you use to rent your movie from the machine. You can see a whole lot of movies for free!
