Sustainable Living: Transportation

How you get around and off campus can directly impact your finances, health, and the planet. Here are some ideas on how to do so while keeping some change in your pockets.

Walk or bike when you can. (Actually, investing in a good bike is a good idea.) I understand that those of you going to a big school where it takes 30-40 minutes to walk across campus aren’t necessarily going to embrace this idea, but think about how much better shape you’ll be in as a result! You will also …

First of all, there are many items that can be worn multiple times before you have to throw them in the wash (granted, this is assuming you don’t actually get them dirty, muddy, etc). You can find plants very inexpensively (check out a farmer’s market, ask for a cutting of a neighbor’s plant, borrow one from your mom, find one on sale) and depending on what you get could save you money as well, like …

Sustainable Living at College: The Project

With a new school year comes new living arrangements and usually many changes in lifestyles. This year, my roommate and I are trying to live sustainably. We have a two-person apartment (still owned by our university, but it feels like our own place), so we have much more control over what we do. Follow along with us as we try to compost, recycle, reuse, keep our lights off and showers short, garden, cook, go to the farmers’ market, clean, remember our reusable bags, and everything else that could be deemed …
